I had the pleasure of being introduced to a successful entrepreneur Richard Tchamourian, owner of Rich 1 Beauty & MediSpa located in Nanaimo B.C. while I was teaching at the ESI Spa Show in Vancouver last year.
Richard was up for a bit of Q&A time regarding laser treatments and the male client process.
ASHe: What made you decide to start offering spa services for men and what are the various treatments you provide?
Richard: Our female and male clients were requesting more treatments for men, so we decided to offer waxing, mani’s, pedi’s and facials. They were also requesting laser therapy hair removal, and we were discovering men were less intimidated about wanting it “all gone” asking for the brozilian. Once the equipment was in place we could suggest laser sessions for sun-age spots and photo rejuvenation that restores the skin.
ASHe: Laser therapies have been making their way into our spas each year. Are laser devices cost effective and do the companies provide adequate training?
Richard: It is easier to sell an existing customer on laser hair removal packages than a new patron. I strongly suggest an exceptional support and training package when purchasing a laser device. Laser devices are VERY expensive, so a budgetary plan is a must before signing on the dotted line.
ASHe: How many laser devices would you suggest to have?
Richard: Obviously a multi functional device would create optimal profits, providing various treatments for the skin, hair or body.
ASHe: Which device and services provide you the most profits in relationship with the costing?
Richard: The laser hair removal has been the most profitable since treatments are fast and the turnover times are quick.
ASHe: What about safety?
Richard: Lasers (or light therapy type treatments) all have different wavelengths/frequencies/depths, each light therapy has it’s own protective eye wear and a protocol of client-therapist procedure.
ASHe: Is tattoo laser removal popular, and is it painful?
Richard: Men usually have larger tattoos. Sometimes the pain to remove a former relationship is worth some discomfort, but most men are fine with the procedure.
To sum it up, when you are chatting up a laser company at any spa show make sure to ask them for due diligence. Have adequate contracts in place that include liability, safety compliances and most of all exceptional training for the safety of your client, yourself and your brand.
